Scattered...Work In Progress

I have a mini sketchbook in my purse, one in my car, another in my knitting bag, and still another in the bag I carry to work. I even keep one by my bed (which is where the idea for Scattered was sketched).

I keep all of my sketch books...tattered, old and dusty has a place, too. I even keep the napkins I sketch on at a restaurant! Sometimes I peruse through a sketch book that was started over a decade, or more, ago and get inspired by a drawing I did but perhaps didn't like. It's also a great way to record how I have evolved as an illustrator, going from traditional to digital. When I have days where I feel less than artistic, I pick up an old sketch book and prove to myself that I really can draw :)

The illustration above will hopefully be completed this week. I'll post the progress!

This week I will also be posting a few sketches from a book I am working on. I can't give any details but I can share a few snippets!

Getting back to Basic Blogging

I have been absent from my blog for far too long. So, I decided to knock the dust off of the dashboard and start with the basics...one entry written, one entry illustrated. Another talented illustrator, Wendy Martin, tweeted today that she was going to post a coloring page...thank you Wendy for spurring me into action! Color Me Monday was the result (if today had been a Wednesday it would have been called Color Me Wednesday...very creative, I know...) Illustrated entry...done.

The written part will get better in time...a little practice...a little discipline (okay, a lot of discipline...) The goal is to share something that is meaningful and inspiring :)

I've had so much fun the past few months as a graphic designer for a local (yet upscale!) publication, Showcase Magazine. At first, it was an all-consuming endeavor...lots of hours and new things to learn. I'm finally getting settled (somewhat) and can return to what I truly love, illustrating.

I've also found another great way to communicate and keep up - FACE BOOK! Think about signing up. There is a HUGE illustration community.

Anyway...back to the feel of sketchbook paper, the flexibility of digital paints and a creative block that seems to be going away.

We spent the weekend in Harrisonburg, VA...did a little hiking and got attacked by ticks and horse flies; went to a winery and brewery, and the best part--taking my daughter to lunch! She'll be 21 in two weeks...time flies.

We came back home on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was hot, hazy and humid but it was still so very beautiful! We found a camp ground we'd like to go back to in the fall.

We have not forgotten...

Digital Water Color Practices....

One of my goals this year is to branch out and stretch the limits of Photoshop with watercolor effects. I need lots and lots and lots of practice! I did a quick digital pencil sketch this morning and practiced with a few different brushes. I didn't use any selection tools to paint...I really want a loosey-goosey feel (although this little guy isn't there yet...not loose enough!)

I LOVE watercolor paintings but could never grasp the traditional technique for myself. Paige Keiser makes it all seem effortless...she's a fantastic traditional painter. Digital painting makes it possible for me to change errors, try different effects, etc. and I absolutely love it! I'm hoping to be able to buy my Cintiq this year which will make the painting all the more fun and easy!

There are free watercolor brush sets available for Photoshop on the web (I need to put something like a few links here, don't I?!). This is where my expertise ends (for now) and new reading begins! Dani Jones-- Danidraws.com is a tremendous talent and resource for all things digital! Check out all of her blogs...there aren't enough hours in the day to learn so much!

My wonderful friend and brilliant artist, Sherry Rogers, has tagged me! I guess I'm supposed to spill 5 revealing pieces about me across the page of my blog. Not very splashy...but here goes!

1. My hands constantly do a "control z" motion when I'm HAND sketching and make a mistake.
2. I love my dogs and cat but am allergic to them so I vacuum and sweep alot! I have waged war on the dust bunnies in my house and they are still winning...one day I will learn the secret and publish a book on how to exterminate the varmints....
3. I don't like foofoo coffee but I go to Starbucks almost every afternoon and get a Venti-sized regular coffee with shots of sugar free vanilla. I always take my sketchbook...it's my little afternoon getaway from the dogs until the weather gets warmer!
4. I love to crochet and just joined a knitting group that meets at Starbucks every Monday night...I am hoping they re-teach me to knit. These ladies are talented!
5. Small-town living (when you come from the city) can be a challenge for me. Some days it drives me up the wall...and then I have to go to our very small Starbucks and get a shot of something that reminds me of more populated areas!

Darn...when I look back at what I just wrote it looks like I spend most of my time away at Starbucks....

By the way...I truly believe God rocks...even in Danville, VA!

Winterjam Tour 2008

My daughter and I went to the Winterjam 2008 tour at the Greensboro Colesium on Saturday. It was so amazing to see 20,000 or so people move to God's music and words! There are no tickets - it's $10 at the door and you get to see amazing performances by Mandisa, Skillet, MercyMe, Barlow Girl and others. For them it's a mission/faith tour to spread the words of Christ to those who may not otherwise know Him. Music packs a powerful message.

If the tour comes to a city near you, it's a wonderful opportunity for a family and/or youth group trip.

After a very busy weekend of deadline work...and when everything had been delivered...I took my sketchpad and headed to the local Starbucks for a little bit of peace, quiet, coffee...and sketching that's not on a deadline!

Tonight was special, though...a local group of people who love to knit have started gathering at Starbucks on Monday night at 6:00 PM. I don't really like to knit, but I love to crochet...and when Robin Hasty came over to say I looked like someone she knew...we started talking...and now I'm gonna be meeting with them next Monday night - only I'll show up with my crochet hook!

She shared her love of knitting - and her blog, For the Love of Fiber. I'm extremely excited! Maybe I'll pick up my knitting needles again!

Danville got about an inch of snow overnight...we might get TWO inches by the end of the day! Coming from Northern Virginia, where we usually got decent snowfalls, living in South-Central Virginia can be disappointing if you want to see some snow! This is Lexi's first snow...she loved it!

My daughter spent the last part of her Christmas vacation with us last week. We had a really good time :) She's a junior at James Madison University getting her BFA in Graphic Design and Printmaking. When she was a freshman we attended a craft show and she saw a purse made from men's ties. The $ tag was too high at the time so I decided to make her one...and a tradition was born! This past weekend I made her 3rd tie purse using ties from my husband's late Uncle Jack. The strap for the purse was made from the tie she bought her brother (he didn't really like it) but it makes an awesome strap! I'm going to make one for myself this week after the deadlines are over. I like to match like patterns or colors - like paisleys or stripes - but Kellie likes the mix.

She also wanted a picture with Lexi for her facebook page. As you can see, she posterized it in Photoshop :)

Can't wait to finish my assignments and sew again!

The last day of an awesome year...

The holidays were wonderful! Christmas has flown by as it usually does. The decorations are put away, the tree is down, the outside greenery is stored...the house looks really bare but it's like having a clean slate to start the new year! ...and ooooooo....2008 holds so many promises!

I thought about doing a New Year's baby for the Picture Bookie theme "Dazzle" but instead choose something really different. It's a baby...and His presence really Dazzles and Inspires an entire world. I hope the New Year brings everyone a sparkle that inspires great works of all kinds.

It's been very busy the past few weeks...but sooo much fun! I apologize for not posting so I decided to "gift wrap" everything into one post!

Thanksgiving was great when my daughter visited. We did alot of shopping, talking, coffee drinking, art chat, and we even did Black Friday shopping (including a trip out at midnight!). It was crazy-fun...well...maybe just crazy...but with her I had fun! My stepson also came for a few days and it was nice.

On December 1st, Danville had it's first night-time Christmas Parade. It's our second Christmas in Danville, VA and very special because we finally feel settled. I was one of 3 judges for marching units in the parade...they were amazing! The floats were spectacular and everyone had a wonderful time. My stepson was here with us and he enjoyed it, too. I can't remember ever seeing a small town parade so it was a first for me, too (and I had great seats!). I love small town living - everyone knows everyone else :)

This weekend we are leaving for Winchester, VA to visit my parents and go to our family Christmas dinner. It will be my husbands first time (been married since 8/2005) attending. It will be great to see everyone again!

Artwork has been steady going...yay! I've got our Christmas Cards done - and early, too! I'm going to try and find time for IF and PB this coming week. It helps balance the hectic days!

My stepson and I made Snowmen Bells last weekend (Picture). We used supplies on hand but they still turned out cute! He took his home to his mom and sister.

This time of year...when everything moves fast and starts to blur...take a moment to sit still and remember all that you have to be thankful for. Give to those in need...a little bit can be a big smile to someone on Christmas morning.

Time to get to work and wrap some gifts...happy shopping to everyone!

August Rush - A great movie!

My daughter visited last week on her Thanksgiving break from school. We had a great time of shopping, braving the Black Friday crowds, more shopping, Starbucks, we went dancing on my birthday...and then we saw the movie August Rush. It's an amazing movie! The soundtrack is awesome! Hide some kleenex in your sleeve...they're gonna be happy tears!

I hope everyone had a blessed and wonderful holiday! Now it's time to get back to work!

Mondays are always great! Today, I'm excited! It's Monday!...less than one week until I go pick up my daughter for Thanksgiving break! yay! Sunday will be a LONG day of driving but worth it. I'll get to see my son for a few hours, too! yippie! They must think I'm nuts...they are 20 and 23. They won't know until they have kids of their own just how much you miss them - even as adults.

Since I don't have any little ones in the house anymore (except, of course, my dogs and cat) I decided to volunteer at the elementary school in my neighborhood. I'll be working 2 mornings a week with a sweet 1st grade boy in the Book Buddies program. I used to be a teachers assistant when my kids were little and I really miss it. Since illustrating full time has become my "real" job, I try to find ways to get out and be with people. I'm REALLY excited about helping at the school!

OH YEAH...I'm also excited because I did my first round of Christmas Shopping this past weekend! I'm stoked...and broke!!!

First Night with Lexi

The first night was great! She slept in her crate next to my side of the bed and snored like her older hound sister, Baylie (our 9 year old beagle). I made the mistake of waking her up at 6 am to go out. She ended up in our bed and slept until 9...but this is the one and only time :) Today has been really good. I took some pics of Lexi and Baylie in the back yard. As you can see...hound bottoms are all that you can notice when they go sniffing for chipmunks in our azalea bushes!

NOTE: "Lexi" means "defender of men"...we thought it was funny since she is so shy :)

Lexi is a 15 week old beagle/black and tan hound mix. She was one of six puppies dropped off at the SPCA in August. All but 2 pups have been adopted. Her foster mom worked with her on crate training and she already knows "sit" and "paw". We're hoping our 9.5 year old beagle will try to welcome the new baby...we're hoping! So far, so good! They are both shy. Right now they are laying side by side chewing on rawhide toys.

I have a counter on my website to track how many visitors and which visitors come to my site. It also tracks what page is visited the most...I never would have guessed that my coloring pages would be so popular! So far I only have two but hope to add more next week.

I'M SO EXCITED! I received my copy of Picture Writing last month and I have finally set the time aside to begin working in the book. It takes 18 weeks to go cover to cover. I will be finishing up week #1 tomorrow. I've been writing and drawing all my life but have always had a difficult time putting the two of them together. I've learned so much in just the first week...I believe there is hope! To anyone who has read Ms. Suen's book or taken her online class...you will understand when I say that I am a hare who is trying to learn to be a tortoise!

I've added coloring pages to my website :) I need to redo the header design to reflect a few changes, though.

My daughter...who is 20 - along with her friends...are into coloring Disney Princesses. I guess I'll have to put up a few Princesses of my own.
